The Presbyterian Book of Order defines the office of Deacon as a ministry of caring, love, compassion, and prayer. Deacons minister to those in distress:  persons who have suffered loss; neighbors in the hospital; member and friends who have lost jobs.  Deacons attempt to assist persons without an adequate place to live or enough to eat.  In short, Deacons reach out to anyone who needs to experience the love of Christ in concrete ways.

While all Christians are charged to love their neighbor and care for one another, the Deacons’ ministry provides an organized way to accomplish the benevolent work of Christ in the church, the community, and the world.

At Community Presbyterian Church, through personal contact, and the donations received in the Deacons offerings each month, the Deacons provide the following:

  • Assistance with pastoral care including home communion to the sick and shut-in.
  • Communication with the family of Christ in out church via cards, letters, personal visits, and the prayer chain.
  • Memorial service receptions.
  • Continuing monetary support to local organizations that aid the needy, abused, and homeless in our community. These include: Family Assistance Ministries, Age Well Senior Services, Abiding Love for Africa, and Habitat for Humanity.
  • Resources in the form of food for Thanksgiving Turkey Bags, school supplies for needy children in two local schools, and Christmas gifts to needy children in partnership with Family Assistance Ministries (FAM) through gift requests from the Angel Tree
  • Sponsorship of the Souper Bowl Sunday food drive of soups to be delivered to FAM for the needy
  • Assistance with transportation to doctor visits, church, etc.
  • Sunday morning golf cart service from the parking lots to the Sanctuary.
  • For emergencies: one-day bus passes and meal vouchers to those in need.

Care And Share Program

One of the Deacon's long-running programs is Care and Share, held at Del Obispo Terrace every Monday at 1:00 p.m. At Christmas time, Care and Share will typically sponsor a Christmas party where they sing Christmas carols, eat Christmas goodies, take many pictures, and enjoy the small poinsettias provided by the Deacons.

In 2017, it is a blessing for Deacons, Anne, Karen, and Susie to meet with these special people and share stories and music.
